A project-type walkthrough of an e-commerce build: catalogue structure, search, cart, checkout, and the integrations underneath.

An E-commerce Build: From Catalogue to Checkout

This is a description of a kind of project we work on: a store built from catalogue to order confirmation, designed around the way the business actually sells rather than around a template.

The Challenge

A retailer selling a growing range of products needed one place where customers could browse, compare and buy, while the team needed orders, stock and customer records to stop living in separate spreadsheets. The catalogue had to reflect real stock, the checkout had to handle the payment path the business already used, and the whole thing had to work on a phone, where most of the browsing happened.

Our Approach

Discovery first: how products are described today, how stock changes, what happens when an order is placed, and which systems already hold the truth about each of those. From that came the data model, because a store is, at its core, a model of products, variants, prices and orders.

Solution

A web application with a structured catalogue, search and filtering that follow how customers actually look for products, a cart and checkout with clear states for every step, and an administration area for products, stock and orders. Order data is written once and read everywhere, so support, accounting and the storefront agree.

Technology

Built on the stack the team can maintain, with a relational database for products and orders, server-rendered pages for speed and search visibility, and payment integration through the provider the business already trusted.

Implementation

Released in stages: catalogue and browsing first, then the checkout path, then the administrative workflows, with each stage tested against real product data before the next began.

Results

Measured against the goals agreed during discovery, and published here only where the numbers have been verified and approved for release.
