Giving Instructors Control of Their Content

A project-type walkthrough of authoring tools: structured content, previews, permissions and publishing without a developer.
Giving Instructors Control of Their Content
This is a description of a project type we build: authoring tools that let subject experts publish and revise material without waiting for a development team.
The Challenge
Every content change required a developer: a typo meant a ticket, a restructured module meant a sprint, and instructors worked around the system by sending documents through email, which put the authoritative version somewhere the platform could not see.
Our Approach
Discovery watched instructors work and asked what they were trying to express: sections and lessons, media, questions with feedback, prerequisites and completion rules. Then the boundaries were drawn: which structure can be edited freely, and which must remain fixed for reporting and assessment to keep working.
Solution
A structured authoring interface with previews that show the learner's view, draft and publish states, revision history, and permissions that let an instructor edit their own material without touching anyone else's. Guardrails prevent the states that would break the platform, such as a module with no completion rule or a question without an answer.
Technology
Content stored as structured data rather than free-form markup, so the same material renders consistently on every surface and remains queryable for reporting.
Implementation
Delivered with a small group of instructors, revised against their actual workflow, then extended once publishing had become a routine rather than an event.
Results
Turnaround from request to published change is measured against the pre-project process, and published only where verified and approved.
Tired of being the bottleneck? Tell us about your project and we will design the authoring around your people.
Project details in this article are deliberately general. Client names, verified results and references are published only with the client's approval.
